Creating a colorful work of art

Gonzalez is an advocate of giving these children representative work.

That personal approach comes through in her art. Gonzalez makes a point of making a personal connection when illustrating a story. This is often displayed in the use of many, vibrant colors.

Students had a chance to pick Gonzalez’s brain Wednesday as she walked around seeing what the children created.

Eight-year-old Jaynar drew two creatures: a dog and a butterfly. The butterfly because it’s beautiful. The dog after her own dog, Blondie.

Jose was not as certain in his drawings. The 12-year-old began with a blank sheet of paper, wondering aloud what animal he should draw when he doesn’t really like any. Finally he chose a snake.

Eleven-year-old Jorge also drew a snake, the head of which included much detail of the skin.
