Turning a lens on those with an eye for art

As a public service to the art world, The Chronicle has elected to blow Jill Miller’s cover.

A number of Bay Area art collectors were mildly amused - or disconcerted, but too cool to admit it - when they visited Miller’s recent show at 2nd Floor Projects, and recognized themselves as her quarry.

For six months in 2007, Miller furtively tracked the comings and goings of local collectors, applying skills she learned working for a private investigator in Los Angeles.

“A lot of what I do is armchair anthropology,” Miller said in a phone conversation. “I enter these different communities and that involves a lot of research. … I’m interested not so much in the art object as what it means to have the experience of making the art. I want my experience as an artist to be about the pursuit of understanding.
